SIBS Romania: Redefining Payments in Eastern Europe

For over 26 years, SIBS Romania, part of SIBS Group, has been a quiet powerhouse in the fintech world, transforming how payments flow across Eastern Europe and beyond. SIBS Group is a Portuguese business that has developed a strong network across countries Central Eastern Europe. The company has offices or partners in Poland, Romania, Austria, Moldova, Serbia, Hungary, Macedonia, Kosovo and Lithuania.

In 2020 SIBS in Portugal acquired Wirecard’s Romania business. This was following an acquition of Paytel in Poland.

Last week the CEO of SIBS Group, Magalena Cascais Tome spoke at Money 20/20 in Amsterdam. After the event, she posted on LinkedIn that “payments are no longer just a technical layer – they are central to Europe’s economic and political agenda. Their impact on the daily lives of people and businesses, as well as their role in driving productivity, development, and inclusion, makes them a strategic priority.”

SIBS is fueling a pan-European payment revolution, teaming up with Spain’s Bizum and Italy’s Bancomat to enable instant mobile payments across borders. Imagine zapping money from Bucharest to Lisbon or Rome in seconds—SIBS is making it real. Their SIBS Gateway platform is a merchant’s dream, offering seamless integration for subscriptions, recurring payments, and every payment method under the sun.

What sets them apart? For instance, this May the Romanian subsidiary of SIBS released a story about how the company had processed Romania’s first e-commerce transaction 31 years ago.   

In 2024 SIBS Romania processed over 1.2 billion payment transactions. An increase of 30% compared to 2023. The company also personalized over 1.5 million banking and loyalty cards. It also covers 80 percent of Romania’s territory with nearly 250 ATMs.
