NEW YORK (S&P Global Ratings) Oct. 13, 2026 — Amid exponential growth in the value of decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocols over the past few years, Aave stands out as a leader in expanding access to the permissionless lending and borrowing of crypto assets, as highlighted in a new S&P Global report, titled “The Engine of DeFi: Inside the Aave Crypto Lending Protocol.”
Key factors that set Aave apart from its DeFi peers are its early adoption and liquidity stickiness, dual thresholds for borrowing and liquidation, and universal lending model, which together have driven up the lending protocol’s total value locked (TVL). As of September 2026, Aave had about $19.2 billion in TVL, making it the largest DeFi lending protocol by a significant margin. This underscores Aave’s emergence as core liquidity and critical financial infrastructure within the DeFi ecosystem.
Aave’s key advancement is that it has transformed lending and borrowing into a decentralized, transparent, and global financial service. It enables users to access liquidity, earn yield, and leverage digital assets without traditional financial intermediaries, demonstrating that large-scale financial markets can operate through smart contracts.
“Aave made DeFi more open, programmable, and capital efficient,” said Cristina Polizu, managing director at S&P Global Ratings. “However, achieving greater adoption will require addressing security vulnerabilities, liquidity and concentration risks and ecosystem interconnectedness.”
